SCENE 1(EDWARD’S HOTEL ROOM)
SIENNA I’m exhausted! I am glad the season is only 4 weeks. I don’t think I could handle this marathon for longer than that.
EDWARD Come, come Si. Take a seat while I pour you a brandy.
SIENNA Mmmmm. Brandy! You better be careful Ed or I’ll fall asleep.
EDWARD I wouldn’t mind at all.
SIENNA This couch is so comfy I may just snuggle down and have a snooze right now.
EDWARD No. Not yet. At least enjoy the brandy first.
SIENNA Don’t worry Ed, I promise I will leave soon.
SIENNA I promise! I probably shouldn’t have accepted your invitation for a night cap but I couldn’t resist seeing your digs. This suite is very nice indeed.
EDWARD It is the Presidential suite of course.
SIENNA Of course! Are you looking for somewhere permanent to live yet?
(EDWARD BRINGS OVER THE TWO BOWLS OF BRANDY AND SITS BESIDE SIENNA)
EDWARD No. Of course not. Why would I?
SIENNA Thank you. You can’t live here forever, now can you?
EDWARD I know that.
SIENNA So what are you going to do?
EDWARD What do you mean?
SIENNA Well it doesn’t look as if you and Aunt Ruby are getting back together.
EDWARD Nonsense, why would you say that?
SIENNA You heard River. It sounds as if something might be developing between Aunt Ruby and Henri.
EDWARD Don’t be ridiculous! River is just trying to annoy me. You know she hates my guts.
SIENNA You do seem to have that affect on people, don’t you?
EDWARD Not on you though, am I right Sienna?
SIENNA No, not on me. I am surprised at how much fun you are. I finally understand what Aunt Ruby fell in love with.
EDWARD Do you Si?
SIENNA Yes. I do.
EDWARD Shall we explore that a bit further.
(HE STARTS KISSING HER NECK)
SIENNA No. Wait a minute.
EDWARD But you taste so good.
SIENNA How can you be kissing me if you think you will be getting back together with your wife - MY AUNT?
EDWARD Well... as you said, Ruby is moving on so why shouldn’t I?
SIENNA But you still think the two of you will have a reunion?
EDWARD Who knows what the future holds Si? I never imagined I would be here with you, but here we are.
SIENNA Yes, here we are...
(HE STARTS KISSING HER AGAIN) Ed, we have to stop before this goes too far.
SIENNA It just doesn’t seem right...
(EDWARD’S HAND TRAILS DOWN HER BODY AND SLIPS UNDER HER DRESS)
EDWARD Does it feel right.
SIENNA Oh god yes.
EDWARD Then it’s right.
SIENNA Yes. Oooooooh.
(HE KISSES HER AGAIN, LONG AND SLOW) Ed, we can’t tell anyone about this. No-one, you hear?
(HE UNZIPS HER DRESS AND LIFTS IT OVER HER HEAD KISSING HER BODY AS HE GOES)
SIENNA If anyone finds out...
EDWARD Shhhh. No-one will find out. It is just between you and me.
SIENNA And this couch.
EDWARD And this couch.
(THE CLAN GATHER FOR A BOARD MEETING)
MAREE Good afternoon everyone. I will make this meeting brief because I know you have a show tonight. Unfortunately the operations of the company don’t stop just because we are in the middle of a season.
EDWARD Why don’t they? Aren’t we busy enough?
MAREE Yes, I know this is an imposition Edward but it won’t take long. Decisions need to be made and I need you all here to make them.
SIENNA Shhh Ed.
MICHAEL Yes Ruby, of course. Don’t worry your tiny little head about it Edward. We are buying in a show next which means most of the hard work is done and what isn’t will fall onto Ruby and Frank to sort out.
EDWARD Well then, why am I here?
BRICK Give it a rest Edward.
SIENNA Brick. Don’t start.
BRICK Why are you defending him all of a sudden Sienna?
MICHAEL Now that is a very good question young lady.
RIVER Stop it, you lot. Actually Mum, I will need to get involved too. Frank can deal with the technical demands but I will need to work with their Stage Manager to help problem solve and get them oriented to the company and the venue.
RUBY Yes, of course, River.
EMERALD I can’t wait to see it. I hear the costumes are magnificent. Not better than Henri’s of course...
EDWARD Why are you getting so exited Emerald. I thought you could barely force yourself to leave the house.
MICHAEL You leave my daughter alone Edward!
SIENNA Relax Dad. I am sure Ed didn’t mean anything by that Emerald. I must say though, you do seem to be much more comfortable with getting out and about than you were a few months ago.
EMERALD You know, what? You are right! I didn’t believe it at the time, but working on this project has been incredibly healing.
RUBY We are all here for you - always.
EMERALD Thanks Aunt Ruby. It makes all the difference in the world.
BRICK I am always happy to be a super hero Em.
EMERALD Very funny Brick! The truth is, I still don’t think I could have done it without the support and help I have recieved from Henri and Fabien.
RUBY Yes, Henri is a man of great strength and genteness, isn’t he?
EMERALD Ooh, who has a crush on Henri I wonder?
RUBY Nonsense. We are just good friends.
RIVER Good friends with slumber parties, eh mum?
EDWARD What? What is she saying Ruby?
RUBY Nothing Ed. Ignore her. She is just being a silly girl. Aren’t you River.
RIVER Er, um, yes. Yes of course! (WHISPERING) Sorry Mum, I forgot.
RUBY (UNDER HER BREATH) We’ll talk about this later! (TO THE REST OF THE ROOM) That’s enough chit chat everyone. You are all eager to prepare for tonight’s performance so let’s get down to business. All the contracts are signed. Have we booked all the crew we need for the buy-in River.
RIVER Yes mum. All except one person.
EDWARD I keep saying she is no good at her job.
SIENNA Ed. Enough.
BRICK If you say one more word insulting my sister and I am going to come over there and knock your block off!
MICHAEL There’s a cue forming and I am at the head of the line Brick.
RUBY Stop it. We aren’t going to get anything done if you men can’t remain civil when you are in the same room together. Edward, stop insulting River. In fact, just don’t speak for the rest of the meeting.
BRICK Here, here!
EDWARD But what did I do?
SIENNA Oh Ed. Sometimes I wonder how you can be so obtuse.
EDWARD That’s not what you said last night...
SIENNA Shut up Ed.
MICHAEL What’s he on about?
SIENNA Nothing Dad. We just ran some lines after the show last night.
BRICK He certainly needs the help...
SIENNA Brick, you be quiet too.
RUBY Everyone be quiet. Now River, who is left to employ and what can we do to help?
RIVER Well, as you know, this show has a lot of music which is performed live by a pianist. I got an email this morning saying their pianist has been in an accident and can’t tour with them for a few weeks so they won’t be here for this season. They have asked me to source one locally.
MICHAEL That’s not much notice. Is there enough time for someone to learn the music and rehearse it in with them.
RIVER Good questions, Uncle Mike. Firstly, we need to find someone really good, and secondly, we will have to bring them here a week early to rehearse them in.
BRICK (WHISTLES) That is going to be expensive.
RUBY Yes, it is Brick, but it is too late to change the show. The publicity has gone out and besides, we will be unlikely to find something as good with no notice. We will just have to wear the expense. We can’t risk any other approach in our first year of operations.
EDWARD How much is this going to cost for goodness sake? Why are we buying shows in anyway? We have a perfectly good bunch of actors to work with here as Richard III has shown.
EMERALD It is too hard to be performing one show and rehearsing another at the same time Edward.
BRICK Especially when one is a Shakespeare!
EDWARD Oh. I hadn’t thought of that...
MICHAEL You never do, Edward. Ruby, you are right. This is something we have to do regardless of the cost. All in favour say aye.
MICHAEL There we are sis. Go ahead. Do what needs to be done.
RUBY Great. Thank you for your support everyone. Now, River, do you have any ideas for a pianist?
RIVER Well... it has to be someone really good. Someone who learns fast/
BRICK Kirana of course.
RUBY AND EDWARD No!
RIVER Mum, I think we have to. She is the best and she is available I believe...
MICHAEL I know this is painful for you Ruby, but I do believe River is right. Kirana is the most obvious choice.
RUBY No Michael, I won’t do it. She is never working here again! In fact, I never want to see her again.
BRICK But Mum!
EMERALD Aunt Ruby!
RUBY I said no and I mean no. You all know what happened. How can you ask it of me?
EDWARD Or me!
SIENNA Ed, I really think you should stop talking right now.
BRICK Nobody cares about you Edward. Not after what you did to Mum and Kirana.
SIENNA Don’t do it Ed.
EDWARD Oh, yes, alright Si...
MICHAEL I know you are in pain Rubes, but I know that you also know this is the best course of action.
RIVER Mum, I promise I will keep her away from you. This show is a buy in so I can’t see any reason you ever even need to be in the same room as her.
MICHAEL River is right. We will protect you. Won’t we team?
(A CHORUS OF ’YES’, ’SURE’, ’OF COURSE WE WILL’) I know it’s a difficult pill to swallow, but we need this Ruby.
RUBY I don’t think I can do it Mikey. I’m not strong enough.
BRICK Mum, you are the strongest woman in the world.
EMERALD It’s true Aunt Ruby.
RIVER And remember, you have Henri...
EDWARD Henri again? What is she on about?
RUBY You all really think this is the right thing to do?
MICHAEL Yes, Rubes. We do.
EDWARD I don’t.
SIENNA You never learn do you?
RUBY Alright. We’ll do it, but I want to be the one to speak to her.
RIVER Are you sure? I am happy to take care of it for you.
RUBY No River. If this is going to happen, Kirana and I need to talk it through.
MICHAEL That’s my girl!
(RUBY HAS CALLED KIRANA IN FOR A MEETING)
RUBY (INTO PHONE INTERCOM) You can send her in now Evan.
(KIRANA ENTERS BUT STANDS NERVOUSLY BY THE DOOR)
KIRANA Mrs Drummond. Hi. Um. Look, I am so sorry about opening night. If I had known you didn’t invite me I never would have come along. I just assumed Michael was speaking for both of you although I guess I should have known really, after all I did sleeep with your husband. It was unforgivable. I can’t even forgive myself. I can’t believe it happened. Believe this though, I never wanted to hurt you. You are such and amazing woman but Edward - he’s so magnetising/ as I know you know...
RUBY Stop! Enough. I didn’t call you here for that Kirana.
KIRANA Oh. Then why am I hear?
RUBY Come in. Don’t just stand there like a lemming. Take a seat. I don’t bite. Or maybe I do. That’s just a risk you’ll have to take.
KIRANA (KIRANA MOVES TO THE DESK AND SITS) Oh. Thank you.
(RUBY GOES TO THE DRINKS CABINET AND POURS 2 SCOTCHES, NEAT AND BRINGS ONE TO KIRANA)
KIRANA Oh. Thanks, but I don’t drink scotch.
RUBY Did I ask you?
RUBY Just drink it.
(RUBY SKULLS HER AND POURS HERSELF ANOTHER ONE BEFORE SITTING DOWN. KIRANA PUTS HER DRINK ON THE DESK)
KIRANA Mrs Drummond, why am I here? You hate my guts and apparently can’t be in the same room as me without being drunk so why did you ask to meet with me.
RUBY It’s not my idea, believe me!
KIRANA Okay. This isn’t comfortable for either of us so I am leaving now. I will try and stay out of your way from now on.
(KIRANA GETS UP TO LEAVE)
RUBY No. Wait! Sit down... please?
RUBY Look, I am sorry I was so rude. You are right. This is extremely difficult for me.
KIRANA So why put yourself through it?
RUBY I will be straight with you, okay? We need a world class pianist for the show we have bought in and everybody agrees you are the only person who can do the job.
KIRANA Thank you...
RUBY Please, sit down and I will tell you more.
KIRANA Look Mrs Drummond, I really don’t think this is a good idea... Everyone knows what happened and I don’t know if I am comfortable at Dramaticus anymore...
RUBY Yes, everyone does know what happened and yet you are still the person the whole family agrees we need for this gig.
KIRANA Even Edward?
RUBY (LAUGHS WRYLY) Haha. No. Not Ed. This is the first thing we have agreed on in a very long time.
KIRANA See. It’s a bad idea.
RUBY Kirana, please sit down and let me tell you more about it. If you still aren’t interested you can walk away, but believe me when I say we really need you and the reputation and potentially the entire future of this company rests in your hands right now.
KIRANA No pressure!
(SHE SITS) Maybe I will have this drink after all...
