(OPENING NIGHT POST SHOW DRINKS IN THE FOYER. HENRI AND RUBY ARE TOASTING)
HENRI
’Ere is zee champagne. And now a toast to la plus belle femme du monde - Ruby Drummond!
RUBY
That is most flattering Henri.
(THEY CLINK GLASSES AND SIP) And I respond with a toast to the most charming man in the world!
(THEY CLINK GLASSES AND SIP)
HENRI
Zis could be zee beginning of a beautiful relationship, oui?
RUBY
Oui, Henri. But seriously. Thank you for being here and standing by my side. I don’t know if I could have handled being here without your strength to lean on. Not with everything surrounding the break up with Edward.
HENRI
So you two are officially se separare?
RUBY
Well, we’re not divorced of course, but I can’t see us getting back together either.
HENRI
So you do not love him anymore?
RUBY
Of course I love him Henri. I will always love him. He is the father of my youngest daughter. You don’t have a child with someone who won’t be in your heart forever.
HENRI
Oh. I guess zis is true.
RUBY
But that doesn’t mean I can be in a loving relationship anymore. I put up with his infidelities for years, but this is the first time he has ever flaunted it right in my face.
HENRI
Ooh la la. It is impardonnable!
RUBY
Yes. But I must find a way to move on. We do have a daughter we must raise together and now we work together too.
HENRI
It is hard ma plus chere but Henri will be ’ere by your side to ’elp in any way ’e can. You know zis, do you not?
RUBY
Yes Henri. You are the knight in shining armour to my damsel in distress.
HENRI
Oui, but remember - beneath all zeee chainmail lies zee ’eart of a mortal man.
(MICHAEL WALKS UP TO THEM AND CRUSHES RUBY IN A HUG)
RUBY
WHAT?! Oh, Michael.
MICHAEL
Well sis, we did it. Dramaticus has opened its first play and - pending reading the reviews - it appears it is a hit.
HENRI
Oui, zee show she is marvellous.
MICHAEL
Henri! Hello. Yes indeed, and it took all of us working together to make such amazing art!
HENRI
oui. It was a strange experience for zis French man, but it was also tres enrishissant!
MICHAEL I have no idea what you just said but it sounded like a good thing.
RUBY
It was the best Michael. And congratulations - both on your insightful and powerful direction and also your incredible acting skills. Your portrayal of Richmond was masterful.
MICHAEL Stop or I’ll start blushing..
HENRI
I do not mean to speak out of turn, but per’aps you should both give a short speech?
RUBY
I think I have made enough speeches for a while Henri. I am still stepping of bits of broken glass from my last one.
MICHAEL
No. Henri is right Ruby. You and I should both say something and thank everyone.
RUBY
You do it. You are the creative genius behind the project.
HENRI
Ah, but you are zee stable ground on which zee whole project stands. You must speak first Ruby - you must claim your throne as la reine of Dramaticus and bestow your favour on the people.
RUBY
(LAUGHING) Well that’s a bit grand I think.
MICHAEL
No. Again Henri tells it how it is. You don’t have to say much. Just congratulate and thank everyone.
RUBY
Okay. But then I am passing it on to you to bring home little brother.
MICHEAL
You’re on. Here we go.
(HE TAPS ON HIS GLASS) Everybody. Okay everyone. Hello! Attention. OY!

(THE ROOM QUIETENS) Thankyou. The right honourable CEO of Dramaticus Theatre Company, Mrs Ruby Drummond, would like to say a few words.

Scene 2: The Exploration
(HENRI AND RUBY ARE HAVING A QUIET MOMENT AFTER THE SPEECHES)
HENRI
You were magnifique, Ruby, just as I said you would be.
RUBY
Thank you Henri. I couldn’t have done it without your encouragement and support.
HENRI
I will always be ’ere for you. You know zat do you not?
RUBY
I am beginning to believe it Henri.
HENRI
Zis is good. You do not need me. You are un femme forte in your own right, but it brings me grande plaisir to be ’ere for you to lean on in zese stressful times.
RUBY
You know, Henri, things don’t seem quite so stressful when you are around. You make me laugh just when I think I am about to cry.
HENRI
I do not like to see zose beautiful blue eyes fill with the tears. Zey sparkle when you laugh so I like to bring de la joie whenever I am with you.
RUBY
Stop it. I’m blushing.
HENRI
And it makes you look like a cheeky young girl.
RUBY
Nobody has said I look young in a very long time Henri.
HENRI
Zen zey ’ave not seen you laugh. I would make you laugh every day if you would let me.
RUBY
Oh Henri, if only that were possible.
HENRI
Are you saying it ees not?
RUBY
You know how things are with Edward.
HENRI
Oui. You are separated. Are you getting back togezer with ’im?
RUBY
No, of course not.
HENRI
Zen zat means you are un femme libre. Free to enjoy zee company of whomever you choose.
RUBY
If only it were that simple Henri.
HENRI
It ees zat simple Ruby. Trust me.
RUBY
I want to Henri. I really want to.
HENRI
Zen, per’aps we can explore what it would take to make it ’appen a bit more tonight?
RUBY
Just what are you proposing Henri.
HENRI
Haha, no proposals. Not tonight at least. Somezing much simpler.
RUBY
I’m listening.
HENRI
Per’aps we should leave zese young ones to zeir fun and enjoy a quiet drink togezer. Get to know each other plus intemement...
RUBY
I don’t know...
HENRI
Ooh la la, I ’ave a lovely Chateau de la Terriere at ma maison which I ’ave been saving for une occasion speciale. I zink tonight would be just perfect, eh?
RUBY
Mmmm, I do adore a good beaujolais...
HENRI
Zey are even better shared in zee company of un ami proche...
RUBY
It’s tempting.
HENRI
Come la plus cher. Come and share zee wine with your Henri. I promise nozing will ’appen which is not your votre desire...
RUBY
That is what worries me Henri.
HENRI
I do not understand...
RUBY
I am afraid of what I desire.
HENRI

If it is me you desire, I can assure you, you ’ave nozing to be afraid of mon amour.

Scene 3: The Recovering
(EMERALD APPROACHES KIRANA IN THE FOYER AT THE AFTER PARTY)
EMERALD
Hello Kirana.
KIRANA
Oh, Emerald, hi. Congratulations.
EMERALD
Thank you. I saw you standing here all alone - and looking rather lost I must say - so I thought I would come over and see how you are going these days.
KIRANA
I’m fine. But thank you for asking...
EMERALD
Christmas was pretty rough on you. I admit I am kind of surprised to see you here tonight - although you do make our foyer look ever so much prettier.
KIRANA
That’s so sweet. Michael invited me.
EMERALD
That’s dad alright. Always trying to bring peace to war zones.
KIRANA
Is that what Dramaticus is? A war zone?
EMERALD
It depends. Have you run into Aunt Ruby yet?
KIRANA
Yes. Just before the show.
EMERALD
And how did that go?
KIRANA
It was... unpleasant?
EMERALD
I bet it was. You are still alive though, so at the very least we are in detent which is still progress. You never know, you may very well make it back into the family fold one day.
KIRANA
Why would I want that?
EMERALD
We are not all like Edward you know. In fact, he isn’t even a blood relation of mine so please don’t judge me by his behaviour.
KIRANA
I would never do that Emerald.
EMERALD
Good, because I want us to be friends. Good friends.
KIRANA
I don’t know if that is ever going to be possible but I think I would like that too.
EMERALD
Excellent. In that case, let us drink to that. To becoming very close...friends.
KIRANA
To being friends!
(THEY CLINK THEIR GLASSES) Do you want to hear something funny?
EMERALD
Always.
KIRANA
I was speaking to your dad earlier and - this is how silly I am - I thought for a moment he was trying to make a move on me. How ridiculous, right?
EMERALD
He what?
KIRANA
Oh, I was completely wrong. My radar is so far off base right now with everything that has happened.
EMERALD
I guess it is. Are you interested in Dad?
KIRANA
No, of course not. Besides, he is definitely not interested in me!
EMERALD
You asked him?
KIRANA
More like he told me! I am way to young for him apparently. It’s a shame Edward hadn’t thought that too really.
EMERALD
Good. I would hate to be in competition with my own father.
KIRANA
What do you mean?
(BRICK WALKS OVER AND JOINS THEM)
BRICK
Kirana, you came! Hi Emerald.
KIRANA
Yes, you finally convinced me.
EMERALD
He did? I thought you said Dad invited you?
KIRANA
He did, but it was Brick who finally convinced me I would be welcome.
BRICK
And see, I was right!
KIRANA
For the most part anyway.
BRICK
Did you enjoy the show?
KIRANA
Yes, I did. It was magnificent. Even Edward was good.
EMERALD
I know. A surprise, hey?
BRICK
Enough about Edward! What about me? Did I set your heart aflutter as Lord Buckingham? Will you dream about me tonight and will they be the kind of dreams I want to be a part of.
KIRANA
You are a shameless flirt sir.
BRICK
Yes indeed. How could I be anything else around a gorgeous woman such as yourself.
EMERALD
Hello, I’m still here you two.
KIRANA
Brick you really are so good for my wounded self-esteem.
BRICK
I will lift your soul up until it floats on the clouds if you let me.
EMERALD
Get a room, you two.
KIRANA
Will you join me in the clouds and dance on the silver lining?
BRICK
Shall we tango? Or is a waltz more fitting for the occassion.
EMERALD
Perhaps I should leave you two alone?
KIRANA
I have always liked the rumba. So sexy and so romantic.
BRICK
A rumba it is, my pretty one!
EMERALD
I’m leaving. Happy dancing you two.
KIRANA
Oh, Emerald, ’bye.
BRICK
By Em. Now Kirana, where were we?

KIRANA
Dancing in the clouds I believe.

Scene4: The Introduction
(SOPHIA APPROACHES EDWARD AT THE AFTER PARTY)
SOPHIA
Scusi signor.
EDWARD
Oh, hello. Yes?
SOPHIA
I wanted to say how much mi e piacutto the show.
EDWARD
Oh, you’re Italian are you? Well thank you young lady.
SOPHIA
Prego.
EDWARD
Hurry on now. There are lots of people who want to congratulate me. I played Richard III you know.
SOPHIA
I know. I saw.
EDWARD
Of course you did. Silly me. Well, once again, thank you and goodbye.
SOPHIA
No. Aspetto! I wanted to introduce myself. Mi chiamo Sophia.
EDWARD
Sophia. Yes, lovely name. Hello. Now toddle off and have fun, eh?
SOPHIA
Sophia di Mondo.
EDWARD
Yes, yes. Groupies are just soooo tiresome.
SOPHIA
La Principessa di Venezia...?
EDWARD
Princess? What? Wait! I know you!
SOPHIA
Si. E vero.
EDWARD
Sophia! Flora’s friend!
SOPHIA
Si.
EDWARD
You are here! You made it to my show! How marvellous.
SOPHIA
Si. I did not understand much of le parole. My lessons in Inglese did not get as far as William Shakespeare, but everything looked spettacolo.
EDWARD
It did, didn’t it?
SOPHIA
You looked molto bello.
EDWARD
I did, didn’t I?
SOPHIA
Si. I barely noticed the hump, you were so regal.
EDWARD
Yes, yes. I don’t want to talk about that. Tell me more. You were swept away by my acting I bet.
SOPHIA
Of course! But I see you understand l’Italiano just like Ruby.
EDWARD
Yes. I had to learn it because when we met her two young brats - River and Brick - barely spoke a word of English. They had spent most of their lives living in Milan until their father died and Ruby moved to England.
SOPHIA
Ah, this makes so much sense.
EDWARD
Enough about them. How long have you been here? I wasn’t told you had arrived.
SOPHIA
Ho arrivato this morning.
EDWARD
Oh my goodness, you must be exhausted! Although I must admit for someone who has been travelling for 24 hours you look as fresh as a daisy - and as beautiful I might add...
SOPHIA
You are too kind.
EDWARD
I mean it. You are even more stunning that I realised from our Skype communications.
SOPHIA
And you are more handsome. I am merely una principessa. You, on the other hand, are a king!
EDWARD
Yes, I am, aren’t I? For a month at least.
SOPHIA
Nonsense. You are a strong and sexy man and any woman would be excited to have you at the head of her household.
EDWARD
Not Ruby, it seems.
SOPHIA
There are other - how do they say? - fish in the sea?
EDWARD
Excuse me, but would I be out of line to suggest you are flirting with me?
SOPHIA
No, you would be right in line. You are a very handsome man and I am sola in a strange land...
EDWARD
Yes, well you are quite gorgeous...
SOPHIA
So perhaps we are making a connection?
EDWARD
But you are my daughters friend. That makes you 15? 16?
SOPHIA
No, no. I am diciotto - 18. I am a fully grown woman.
EDWARD
Yes, I can see that.
SOPHIA
Perhaps we could leave this party and have a quiet drink somewhere?
EDWARD
Yes, well, normally I would jump at that invitation...
SOPHIA
Then shall we andarcene?
EDWARD
Shall we...? No, wait. Oh, Si, there you are. I am sorry Sophia but I have to talk to Sienna. I have something - important - to tell her. Keep mingling why don’t you?
SOPHIA
But signore...!

(EDWARD WALKS OFF) Round one to you Edward Drummond.

Episode 26 - The Remonstration

INT.  BACK STAGE.  RIVER AND FRANK ARE GOING OVER THE SCHEDULE FOR THE NEXT DAY.
RIVER Yes, Frank, that should work.  I nearly had a heart attack when the supplier rang and gave me the final dimensions!
FRANK No stress, Miss Drummond.  Every problem has a solution.
RIVER (laughing)  Frank, we are going to be working together quite intimately for a long time to come, so I think you can start calling me River.
FRANK Thanks River.  I wasn’t sure.  What, with you being the boss’s daughter and all.
RIVER When we are here at Dramaticus I am the Head Stage Manager, not Ruby’s daughter.  You are the Technical Manager and we are going to have to develop a strong working relationship in order to make this theatre work.  We can’t do that if I am putting on airs and graces, or if you think you can’t speak opening and honestly with me without fear of repercussions.
FRANK That is true.  I am very relieved to hear you say that.
RIVER Look, it’s getting late and there is not much more we can do today.  How about…
