Episode 27 - The Peacemaking

INT.  EMERALD’S WORKROOM. THE DRESS IS ON A MANEQUIN AND EMERALD IS MAKING ADJUSTMENTS.

EMERALD
So Flora thinks she can just steal my designs and then steal the show, does she.  Well I have news for her!  Nobody tries this with me and gets away with it.  If I can survive a car crash, I can certainly survive a power struggle with a silly little teenager.  How dare she!  What gives her the right to think she can put in no effort at all and then be the dictator over all of us?  Well, I know the answer to that really, now don’t I.  It is Aunt Ruby.  All Flora has to do is pout or throw a trantrum, and there comes Mummy, running to her rescue.  I wish I still had a Mum who would do that.  I can just imagine Mum and Aunt Ruby going at it.  Boxing gloves on.  The referee dinging the bell, and off they go!  Flor and I in opposite corners, wiping the sweat from their brows and pouring water over their faces, the entire arena roaring, desperate to see who lands the fatal blow.  Ding, ding, ding.  “And it is a TKO to April Bannister!”  The room erupts with applause and Flora slinks away in defeat.  Oh, Mum, I need you so badly right now.  I am exhausted and I am so afraid I won’t get this done in time to save Sienna.

ENTER RUBY
RUBY
Oh, Emerald, I am so sorry.

EMERALD
(jumping in surprise) Oh, Aunt Ruby.  I didn’t see you there.

RUBY
I am sorry if I scared you.  I just wanted to pop in before I went home to see how you were going.

EMERALD
Oh.  I’m fine.

RUBY
No you’re not.  I heard you just now.

EMERALD
Oh.

RUBY
You are overworking yourself and you miss your Mum.  I am sorry she is not hear for you.

EMERALD
Yes.  I do miss her.  I am just being silly though.  Look, you know I always love it when you visit, but I really have a lot of work to get done for tomorrow, so I don’t really have time for a visit...

RUBY
Is this the dress Sienna and Brick chose?

EMERALD
Yes.

RUBY
It’s beautiful

EMERALD
Yes, it is perfect really.  They did well.

RUBY
If it’s perfect, do you really need to do anything to it?  You need rest.

EMERALD
It is a perfect dress, but not a perfect costume.  Sienna will need to shine in a room full of beautiful and elegant women.  It needs more.

RUBY
I guess you are right.  You are the designer, after all.  Is there anything I can do to help?  Have you eaten?

EMERALD
No, but I will find something in the fridge a bit later.

RUBY
Well, that is at least one thing I can do for you.  I will make you a lovely nourishing meal to help keep you energised as you work.

EMERALD
No, no.  I’m alright.  Really.

RUBY
Nonsense.  If your Mum were here she would tell you I am right.  Don’t worry, I won’t disturb you, and once I have served your meal, I will disappear.  I love you, you know, and I feel terribly guilty about what has happened.  I am just struggling with how to prioritise everyone’s competing needs.  I admit when I made this decision I truly didn’t consider the consequences.  I am only just beginning to learn how theatre works.

EMERALD
Oh, I know.  You are just going to have to learn to consult a bit more Aunt Ruby.  Every decision you make will have huge consequences for all of us.  We are here for you too, you know.

RUBY
I know love.  (they hug) Anyway, it’s off to the kitchen with me.  Call if you need any help.

EMERALD
I will.  And Aunt Ruby...

RUBY
Yes.

EMERALD
Thank you.

END.

JO BOYD TAKES OVER THE ROLE OF KIRANA

In 2019 the role of Kirana has been taken over by Jo Boyd as we sadly had to say goodbye to Gabrielle Reiher at Christmas. Gabrielle has gone on to focus on other exciting opportunities. You may remember Jo from filling in the role of Ruby Drummond when Maree Shefford was a bit poorly. When we realised we needed a new Kirana we didn't have to look far at all. Welcome to the team Jo!!!

Jo Boyd is playing the role of Kirana
Jo is a mother, a grandmother and a small business owner and also really enjoys modelling and creative photography. She has a real passion for acting which has steered her toward film and podcasting and in all of this she relishes a good challenge! Jo's films include The Last Hope, To Love Somebody, Dark Night of the Zomboogies, Blue, Faberge Black, and The Faceless Man. She is currently filming Of Course God Is Italian. Jo also featured in the music video Which Witch is Which. Jo would love to take on more featured speaking roles and extras work.
