Episode 15 – The Disbelief

INT.  BANNISTER HOME.  RIVER IS HELPING EMERALD HEM A STAGE CLOTH.

RIVER
(laughing).  Holy cow.  This cloth goes on forever Emerald!

EMERALD
Hey, don’t blame me.  It needs to be this big to reach across the whole stage.

RIVER
I am blaming you.  You are the designer.

EMERALD
So?

RIVER
So you decided how big the stage was going to be in the first place!

EMERALD
(Chuckles) True.  You’ve got me dead to rights.  This is all my fault.  I surrender.

RIVER
This is truly beautiful material though.

EMERALD
Yes it is.  Expensive enough too.  I thought your mum was going to have a heart attack when you presented her with the costings.

RIVER
She complains all the time, but really she wouldn’t begrudge a dime. She has set up this company for all of us and she would never want to stifle anyone’s creativity over something as silly as money.  Not when it is a really amazing creation such as your design.

EMERALD
True.  Aunt Ruby always comes across as tough and ruthless, but underneath it really does seem as if all that really matters to her is her family.

RIVER
If only all the members of the family understood that.

EMERALD
I assume you are referring to Edward and Flora.

RIVER
(Chuckle) I am pretty transparent, aren’t I?

EMERALD
No,not you.  The situation is pretty transparent.

DOOR BELL RINGS AND RUBY ENTERS

RUBY
Oh, I am so glad I have found both of you here.

EMERALD
Hello Aunt Ruby.  Come and sit down.  I don’t suppose you are here to help us with this hemming?

RIVER
Hi Mum.  You look a bit flustered.  Is everything all right?

EMERALD
Would you like a drink?

RUBY
Yes please.  A scotch. Neat.

EMERALD
Wow.  That sounds serious.

RUBY
It is, and you are not going to like it Emerald.

RIVER
What’s wrong Mum.  You are starting to scare me.

EMERALD
Yes.  Just relax.  Here’s your drink.  Whatever it is, I am sure we can work it out.

RIVER
It’s about the opening, isn’t it?

RUBY
Yes, I am afraid it is.

RIVER
Okay, so just tell us.  We are here for you.

RUBY
Is Sienna here?

EMERALD
Not yet, although I do expect her at any moment.  She is coming to help with this little sewing bee.  We thought it would be a fun, girly bonding thing.

RUBY
You girls have become so close since this project began.

EMERALD
Yes, I suppose we have.  It has been a marvellous opportunity to reconnect both families.  Especially as we all have so much in common.  A family business, so to speak.

RUBY
So does that mean Flora is joining you too?

EMERALD
(Guffawing) I very much doubt it.

RUBY
Why?  Did you even invite her?

EMERALD
No.

RUBY
Why not?  She is your cousing too.  She is just as much a part of this family as any of you.  It is cruel for you to exclude her from things like this.  No wonder she feels like an outsider and as if we don’t love her.

RIVER
Mum, we didn’t invite her because we knew she wouldn’t come.  This is too much like hard work.  Flora doesn’t believe in work.  She thinks everything should be given to her on a silver plate, ready-made and perfect.
SIENNA ENTERS.
SIENNA
Ah.  Now, I just know we are talking about the adorable Flora.

EMERALD
Hi Si.

RUBY
That’s enough sarcasm young lady.  Flora is your cousin and deserves respect as such.

SIENNA
Hello Aunty Ruby (kisses her cheek).  I am sorry.  I didn’t mean to upset you.  I know I was being mean.

RUBY
It’s not me being upset which is the concern.  It is Flora feeling left out which is the problem.

SIENNA
I know, but she makes it really hard to like her sometimes.

EMERALD
All the time.

RIVER
Em!

EMERALD
Sorry.

RIVER
Is this what you came to talk to us about Mum?  It doesn’t really seem like the kind of thing to get you this upset.  Unless Edward has been picking at you.  Is that what has happened?

RUBY
Yes and no.

SIENNA
Come on Aunt Ruby.  Out with it.  What has you so disturbed.

RUBY
None of you are going to like it.  Especially not you Sienna.

SIENNA
Let me guess – Flora is insisting on being back in the main number of the show case even though she hasn’t rehearsed and hasn’t ever let Emerald finish her costume.

RUBY
No, no.  Flora and Edward will still do the two songs after the main proceeding are finished.

SIENNA
Phew!  That’s a relief.

RIVER
Come on Mum.  If it’s not that, then how bad could it possibly be?

RUBY
Well, this change will impact both Sienna and Emerald quite badly with the little amount of time we have left, and with so much still left to do.

EMERALD
This is not going to be good, is it?

RUBY
No Emerald, it isn’t.

EMERALD
Just tell us.  Treat it like pulling of a bandaid.  Make it quick and maybe the pain won’t linger.

RUBY
Okay, here it is.  I have agreed to allow Flora to wear Sienna’s dress for the opening.

RIVER, SIENNA, & EMERALD
What?

END.

JO BOYD TAKES OVER THE ROLE OF KIRANA

In 2019 the role of Kirana has been taken over by Jo Boyd as we sadly had to say goodbye to Gabrielle Reiher at Christmas. Gabrielle has gone on to focus on other exciting opportunities. You may remember Jo from filling in the role of Ruby Drummond when Maree Shefford was a bit poorly. When we realised we needed a new Kirana we didn't have to look far at all. Welcome to the team Jo!!!

Jo Boyd is playing the role of Kirana
Jo is a mother, a grandmother and a small business owner and also really enjoys modelling and creative photography. She has a real passion for acting which has steered her toward film and podcasting and in all of this she relishes a good challenge! Jo's films include The Last Hope, To Love Somebody, Dark Night of the Zomboogies, Blue, Faberge Black, and The Faceless Man. She is currently filming Of Course God Is Italian. Jo also featured in the music video Which Witch is Which. Jo would love to take on more featured speaking roles and extras work.
