Episode 9 - The Relief

INT.  BANNISTER HOUSE

MICHAEL
It is so nice to be able to have a quiet evening at home with my two beautiful daughters

SIENNA
Yes it is Dad.  It feels like ages since we did this.

EMERALD
Well, there have been a few things going on. (giggle)

MICHAEL
I know.  I am so sorry girls.

SIENNA
For what, Dad?

MICHAEL
I feel like I have neglected you.  First there was the planning and building of the theatre, and we’ve only just finished that and we jump straight into rehearsals and preparations for the launch.

EMERALD
We’ve all been busy Dad, not just you.  The good thing is that at least it is the same project overwhelming us all, so we have that in common.

SIENNA
So true.

MICHAEL
Yes.  I have only seen you at rehearsals, Sienna, and poor Emerald.  I feel like I only see you when I need something or a design isn’t quite right.

EMERALD
It’s fine Dad.  It’s the nature of the business.  In many ways we are really lucky that we can all share in different aspects of this venture together.

SIENNA
Speaking of which, how are you enjoying being the resident designer?  Is it what you imagined it to be?

EMERALD
It’s a lot more time consuming than I thought it would be, and I have to compromise so much!

MICHAEL
In what way

EMERALD
Well, I knew that I would have to work with you Dad, and we would have to agree on stuff, but I really didn’t know I would have to deal with everybody’s individual wants and needs.

MICHAEL
What do you mean?

SIENNA
I think I know what  - or should I say who – you are talking about.

EMERALD
Oh, no.  It’s nothing really.

MICHAEL
Yes it is Emerald.  Tell me what is going on.

SIENNA
It’s Flora, Dad.  Obviously!

MICHAEL
Aaaaah.  Tell me what happened.

EMERALD
Seriously, it’s fine, and now I don’t have to worry anyway, because she is no longer in the show.

MICHAEL
Well, you are half right and half wrong, but tell me what’s been happening.  Hopefully we are all going to be working together for a long time so I need to know what is going on.

EMERALD
Oh, I just didn’t realise that actors had so much say about the details of their costume design.

MICHAEL
Well, they do have a say, but in the end it is your design.

SIENNA
Sienna has been a real little cow about the costume dad.  How many times have you had to remake it in the last two weeks Emerald?

EMERALD
Oh, only a few.

SIENNA
At least three times that I know about.

EMERALD
There have been five changes.  I am not even sure it would have worked with the costumes for you and Brick, it is so different now.  I have to admit I am glad it won’t be worn now.

MICHAEL
You should have told me, Sweetheart

EMERALD
You were so busy and were under so much pressure.

MICHAEL
I am never to busy to hear you.  Both of you.  You are my first priority and nothing gets in the way of that.  If you need to speak with me, I will always make time for you.  Never doubt that for a moment.  I love you, and there is nothing in the world more important to me.

SIENNA
We love you too Dad.

EMERALD
I am sorry I didn’t confide in you Dad.  I promise I will come to you next time.

SIENNA
Anyway, it’s a moot point now.  Flora is not in the show now so we can forget all about her.

MICHAEL
Ah, not so fast.  It turns out both Edward and Flora will be performing after all.

EMERALD
Groan!

SIENNA
What?

MICHAEL
Edward was giving your Aunt a hard time about it, and River came up with a great suggestion.  They will sing a duet after the main launch ceremony is over.

EMERALD
So I have one day to design and make two new costumes?

MICHAEL
No, no!  I only agreed on the condition that they have to buy whatever they need off the rack.

SIENNA
Excellent.  That sounds like they are exactly were they belong, ready to wear background music.

EMERALD
Sienna!

MICHAEL
Alright.  Enough about Dramaticus.  Let’s just enjoy this lovely evening and pretend we don’t have a care in the world.  A toast!  To my two beautiful daughters, and their amazing father! (They all laugh)

END.

Meet Emerald Bannister

EMERALD BANNISTER

Emerald has had a difficult life lately. It did not begin this way.  She was raised in a beautiful, loving family and traveled the world with them.  She and her sister, Sienna, were best of friends despite the age difference, and both shared the dream of becoming actors like their father.  The talks Michael was having with Disney was actually for a television series starring both young women and their future looked bright.

Five years ago in Las Angeles the family were driving home from dinner when a drunk driver ran into their car.  Emerald's mother was instantly killed and her father and herself were permanently injured.  Only Sienna escaped unharmed and even though her sister stayed with her and supported her completely, Emerald could not help feeling resentment that she was left unscathed.

Emerald suffered burns to 40% of her body and has been left with permanent burn scars on her legs and face, as well as an enduring weakness.  The doctors have done what they …
